Six Tips to Make Your Small Business Look Bigger

6 Tips To Make Your Small Business Look Bigger

Consumers and other business professionals like to work with established, professional businesses. So if you are a small business with one to three team members, how do you look bigger and better to the prospective customers you want to do business with? Here are 6 tips to make your small business look bigger. I’ve purposely focused on fixes that are low cost or free, so let’s get your business geared up!

6 Tips to Make Your Small Business Look Bigger

Tip 1:  Be easy to find

Audit your business info on the web. Conduct a Google search for your company name and personal name. If you are like many small businesses your address, office hours, phone numbers and more are often incorrect. This is so frustrating for your potential clients and guesses what? If you don’t clean it up, no one will. Make the most of your Google My Business listing and other free web directories to get at least basic visibility on the web. Don’t know how to do this? We can help.

Tip 2: Display your office hours

If you are truly running your business like a business, you show up to work from x o’clock to x o’clock. It doesn’t matter if your are running a virtual office or have a “real” office. Start at 9 and close at 5 or whatever hours make sense to you. Makes sure these hours are correct in your Google business listing and other directories! People like consistency.

Tip 3: Answer your phone with a professional greeting

If you are personally answering your phone, answer it professionally. “Firstview Online Marketing. How can I help you?” This is the way big companies answer their phone and so should you and your team.  Don’t just say “Hi” or not even speak when you answer (both things I encounter frequently).

Tip 4: Record a professional voice mail message

A lot of small business owners are using their cell phones to answer their business calls, and this is fantastic. However, I can’t tell you how many times I hear a stock voice mail message like “The person you are trying to reach at 965-007-5774 is not available. Please leave a message.” Did I call the right number? Is this really a business? Who is this mysterious person at 965-007-5774? A good example of a professional voice mail message is “Thank you for calling “company name”. We are unavailable right now. Please leave your name and number and we’ll get back to you just as soon as possible. Thanks for calling.” Sooooo much better and a super-easy fix.

Tip 5: Fix your website

I’m not talking about spending thousands of dollars on a new site, just find a way to make what you have work until you can invest in a better site. Make your phone number prominent on every page. Make sure your contact form works and that you are receiving the emails. Check your spam folder several times a week. View your site on a smartphone and see how it looks. If you are using a WordPress template and your site doesn’t properly fit on the phone screen, upgrade to a template that has “responsive design”. With our average client receiving around 30% of their visits from mobile devices, this is very important.

Tip 6: Email address

Make sure your email addresses are person@companydomainname.com and not a Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. account. I have seen some crazy “business” emails in my time and they just aren’t professional.  Keep them as your personal emails, but get a business email ASAP.
